WHO IS THE BLUE HAIR LADY?

Laura Cerwinske, the Blue Hair Lady, is an artist and writer and, as the French say, “a woman of a certain age.”
My blue hair is an expression of a style I think of as “Imperial punk” – a royal blue homage to the older women of past generations, like that of my grandmother, whose fashion was to rinse hair blue, and the younger rebels who enjoy the provocation of an “unnatural” color.

I enjoy the way my blue hair thwarts anticipated perceptions. A salesperson once looked at me and asked, “Am I seeing what I think I’m seeing?” As an artist, what greater question can you generate. My answer was, “I don’t know. Are you?”

I color my hair (with a product called Splat: Blue Envy) every couple of weeks, and the color changes in intensity and hue from day to day as it fades or streaks. I like the way my own white and gray hairs mix with the blue as they grow out. Every week my look is something subtly different.

Blue hair is an illustration of my philosophy of life, of the great possibilities we have everywhere for self-expression – and of the great privilege of living an expressive life. Many people in many parts of the world live in situations so limited by struggles to survive or restricted by reactionary governments that individual expression is out of the questions. The Blue Hair Lady symbolizes the individual freedom.
